“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. 1988 Optimist Class News + More Pics

Concentrating on 1988 today, the Optimist class was pretty busy with Nationals, various Provincials, overseas regattas for the top guys, and even an Optimist Masters regatta for some fun.

The Natal Junior Champs were sailed at Midmar where Michael Giles won, beating Alon Finkelstein.

The Optimist Nationals (in fact Youth Nationals) were sailed at Saldanha Bay reported SA Yachting Magazine. Michael Giles won pretty convincingly with J Hooyberg runner-up and C Ainslie third.

Natal Dominate Junior Nationals said the SAILING Mag report. The event was held in ideal conditions with 12 to 20 knots winds throughout. Wind shifts were few, so picking a “lucky shift” was unlikely.

Optimist American & European Campaign. The American event was unusual as 5 races were cancelled or abandoned due to very light winds. Plus some of our team went down with Chickenpox!

PLUS: Forever An Optimist. The third annual inter-club First Bowring Oppy Masters was held at the Murray Park Yacht Club on July 30th and 31st. The event achieved a number of noticeable firsts – a record fleet, its first ever senior Springbok skippers and heated controversy over the final results.

Transvaal Champs Wrap-up. Christopher Aspeling won overall with Alon Finkelstein and Ryan Turner in the runner-up medal spots.
