“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. 1982 – 1984 Round the Island Races

The 1982 winners.

by Richard Crockett

So here’s a bumper issue of reports on the Round the Island Races – 6 reports of the 1982, ‘83 & ‘84 races.

What is clear is that Sponsorship of the event was becoming possible due to its increased stature in the sailing world, but to keep sponsors did not appear to be that easy.

Martin Lambrecht, winner of the 1983 race.

As always, this event has “wind and water” issues – the 1982 event a complete drifter, the 1983 being blessed with good winds and the 1984 event threatened due to low water levels. Hardly the recipe for a successful event, but the numbers kept increasing with 700 in 1982 although 440 did not finish within the time limit.

Of these three reports, a memorable winner was Martin Lambrecht sailing the only Topper dinghy in the fleet. Kim Phillips on a Dart and Munro Bezuidenhout (remember him?) Won on a Stadt 23.

The 1984 winner.

Enjoy these 6 reports.
