Hobie Hout Bay Haul
As can be seen from the poster and the picture, this will be the revival of an event that was last held in the 80’s! Many people perceive Hout Bay to be a fluky sailing venue, however the south-westerly as well as the northerly and north-westerly’s offer fantastic racing in the bay with clear, steady breezes. Should the wind be out of the south, we will have an informal race off the beach to the bridge boat which will be …

I had the pleasure of sailing the Margo Mackay night race this past weekend. After arriving nice and early at SYC, I managed to carry out some maintenance on my “magic ‘Pora Fly” I was ready to launch by 14h30. Due to crew issues my colleague Ben Mienie, who had just finished launching his Krokodil, suggested that we “join up” and sail on one of our Dragonflies. So after having my Dragonfly on the slip way, I returned it to …

Held over 21/22/23 March in Durban Bay by Island Sailing Club a disappointing turnout of 14 boats entered. Friday sailing was held in a good breeze of 12-18 knots near the container terminal. Unfortunately breakages were the order of the day with 5 boats retiring with collapsed masts and torn sails! Saturday saw 3 races sailed, and sailing stopped early in the afternoon due to 20 knot plus winds. Again breakages of several boats occurred. After seeing the ISC lawn …

The 17th MAC 24 hour sponsored by Vasco’s Taverna was held on 15 and 16 March at Milnerton Aquatic Club. There were 26 entries, 4 more boats than last year, with over 225 sailors competing in shifts, sailing for 24 hours. Racing started at 12h00, and at 22h00 a meeting was called as the wind was averaging over 25 knots, so racing was postponed and restarted again at 04h30 when the winds had moderated. See the pics from Angela Gray …

I would like to clear up a misunderstanding about the “Pathway” document that was posted on the SA Sailing Facebook wall on 14 January under the heading “Here is the new SAS class structure. Open for comment.” This particular document as it appeared did not in fact reflect a “new SAS class structure”, and had not been approved by the SA Sailing Council or any of the Regional EXCOs. It was actually one of a number of “work in progress” documents …

From all accounts another great event. Despite the wind not playing ball on Friday and the bulk of the fleet retiring due to no wind (there were 10 finishers) the pursuit race on Saturday made up for it. by Richard Crockett Many of us have tried handheld anemometers over the years. I have, and often not with particularly good results, so my interest was piqued when I saw a news release about a smartphone anemometer which works with iPhone, iPad and Android smartphones. Once you have the anemometer you need to download the free Vaavud wind app. This app will give you all your basic measurement needs including graph, history and a live map. The unit has two …
