Youth Nationals Begin This Weekend

by Richard Crockett

The most important youth sailing event in this country, the Youth Nationals, kicks off this weekend from Stilbaai on the Vaal Dam, and runs until 20 December.

It’s an event that attracts all the top youth sailors from across the country, and others who simply attend to gain experience as they climb the youth sailing ladder. So well over 100 young sailors will be pitting their skills against the elements and other sailors. More importantly it attracts sailors in singlehanded and crewed monohull dinghies and catamarans.

The most fiercely contested classes are always the Optimist and Dabchick classes.

Some pre-regatta training took place today (Friday) under the watchful eye of Clair Walker, herself a former youth sailing champion.

Thanks to Andrew Tough for the pre-regatta training pics.

The schedule begins with registration and measurement on Saturday & Sunday 15 & 16 December, with the first race schedule to have the warning signal fired at 09h55 on Sunday morning.

Team racing is on Monday.
