I found today’s editorial quite interesting as it was written way before computers were a thing, and when handicapping calculations were done manually by hand and by using good old basic arithmetic.
Today, handicappers rely on computers and yachties demand instant results NOW and not at the handicappers leisure! I remember when the humble old scientific calculator was the “new tool” for working out handicaps. But that was in days of yore when we were all much more patent, chilled and relaxed, and instant gratification was not a “thing”.
Today’s feature opens like this: “Time correcting in the time-on-time handicap systems used by so many sailing clubs is fairly standard in formula but varied in practical method. Because time correction represents a large proportion of a bridge crew’s hardest work the good cheer, or otherwise, on the bridge depend very largely on the practical methods used to reduce the labour.”
As I said, quite interesting.
