“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Yacht Harbour At Miller’s Point

By Richard Crockett

I was intrigued by the report in the February 1967 issue of SA Yachting which stated that a yacht harbour was to be built at Miller’s Point in False Bay.

It appears that this never happened, who knows why, as from what I gather there is today a slipway used mainly by ski-boats. It was named Miller’s Point in 1825 when the land was bought by Edmund Miller who developed it as a whaling station. The area now forms part of the Table Mountain National Park after it was donated by the Molteno family in 1961.

I did enjoy the fact that the harbour was referred to “as an asset to the nation, as small boats more than played their part in time of war. It was the small boats that got the British Army off Dunkirk.” It went on to say that their potential role in South Africa was equally high.

How true.
