Last week I shared a small feature on Hermanus Yacht Club being hosts for the 1959 National Regatta. Today there is more as the advertising leaflet for the regatta was published in SA Yachting magazine.
The event was being pushed and marketed hard – and why not? The words in the opening paragraphs make the venue tantalisingly attractive, and read as follows:
“Quite apart from the racing, next month’s national Sailing Regatta at Hermanus is certain to be as enjoyable as any that have so far been held. Never has there been a venue with so many attractions in addition to sailing, or a better chance for the family yachtsman to give his attendant clan a chance for fun of their own, without banning them from the precincts of the racing.
“The reason is: bags of room and shade round the Hermanus Yacht Club and close by beaches and mountains, hotels and golf, resident families in their holiday homes and country jaunts galore in stirring and interesting scenery.
“The pilgrimage from the Highveld and north of the Limpopo will be amply repaid.”
Well let’s hope that the regatta lived up to the hype. I will share the report soon.
