Race 2 of the pre-worlds got under way in strong westerly conditions – a good indication of what PE can offer the sailors.

After an abandoned start, the fleet got clean away in the conditions and raced towards the lighthouse at Cape Recife. After an eventful beat, the front runners, hoisted spinnakers and gybed away for the mark. Teams that gybed and set spinnakers immediately caught up slightly.

On the second beat the wind changed slightly and teams headed to the right and also gained by doing that.

The reach saw the teams spread out and that is when Mike Holt and Carl Smit took the lead from behind to win the race and with that be tied for first place with Ian Pinnell and Johannes Tellen. Sand Higgins and Paul Marsh finished the regatta in third.

The top SA team, the Funke brothers, finished 7th.

Tomorrow (Friday 27 March) is the final measurement day and registration before the World Championship starts on Saturday.
