Racing got underway around 12h00 after Race Officer Doug Allison spent some time waiting for the SW wind to settle and setting the rectangular course, starting towards Milnerton.

The wind was a fairly moderate SE, varying between 10 and 18 knots, with big swell in the bay.

On  the first beat, RCYC, RNYC, TSC, POYC and LDYC al went left. HBYC, DYC and Wits went right.

The boats on the left could not see the weather mark and there was no mark boat at the mark. There was a boat at the second mark of the rectangle, which they could see, and so they headed there. This cost them and HBYC and DYC got to the weather mark ahead of the boats that went left by a long way.

HBYC managed to hold their substantial lead very well for the whole race to take 1st place. RCYC and POYC sailed well to fight their way ahead of DYC during the course of the race.
