China Coast Regatta 2019

by Richard Crockett

Thanks to the generosity of Ellian Perch, a crew of Cape Town yachties are competing in the China Coast Race Week in the waters south and east of Hong Kong Island, as their boat was shipped there from Cape Town. They will be sailing the Cape 31 ‘Orion DYP’ which will be skippered by Mark Sadler.

In the crew are Gary Sindler, David Rae, Martin Lambrecht, Joweal Claasens, Mike Giles and Davey James.

Racing takes place from Friday until Sunday, with our guys up against some stiff competition in the IRC Racer 1 division – as they will race against some Mills 41s, a Ker 42 and other top international designs. ‘Orion DYP’ is the smallest boat in that class, so the going may well be tough for them, even on handicap.

2019 marks the 27th edition of the regatta which was established in 1993. The event is based out of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s Middle Island clubhouse; with sailors competing in a variety of windward/leeward and geometric and island courses. IRC, HKPN multihull racing takes place over three days with the HKPN monohull division joining for the weekend. Competing yachts can expect the best of Hong Kong’s sailing conditions; excellent breeze, blue skies, warm friendly waters and great parties.

Well packaged for container transport, the boat arrived safely.
