49er Worlds. A Mixed Bag for Benji & Alex

by Richard Crockett

I keep saying it’s tough out there, which it always is, with today’s results showing this as the guys had two races outside the top 10.

But all was not bad for the duo of Benji Daniel and Alex Burger, who according to our man o the spot, had some flashes of brilliance, and good starts.

Alex Lehtinen reports as follows:

Race 1: “Light winds and chop made for pretty challenging conditions. They had a great start and made good tactical calls, although these were nullified by a lack of pace – most of which was fixed with a small niggle with the vang. They finished 6th.”

Race 2: “Their pace having been sorted out, the guys put in another great start. The fleet had started to figure out the conditions which made for very intense racing and critical mark roundings. A few marginal errors caused big losses, and the team had their worst race of the day, a 14th.”

Race 3: “The wind became very unstable and forced the committee to move the course. The reset, coupled with shifty breeze, brought new challenges, but our team were quick to bounce back and put up another decent performance to round the day off with an 11th.”

Tomorrow is the final day with just 2 races scheduled. Please keep rooting for our guys.
