The Sturrock Shipping Cape Point Challenge

12th / 13th April at Fishhoek Beach Sailing Club This turned out to be a wonderful event with some excellent ‘calls’ by the race committee. I think everybody underestimates the amount of work that goes into organising an event like this. Generous sponsorship once again by Sturrock shipping enabled FHBSC to donate over R 20,000 of our entry fees to the NSRI. The NSRI were on standby on both Saturday and Sunday and if you saw how quickly that the ... Read More »

Hobie Triple Crown – Langebaan

The final round of the Triple Crown Series was held in Langebaan on Saturday 5th April. It was good to see our newest Tiger Owner Sydney Jacobs and son Steven Sailing. Also there was Danie Snyman sailing a Tornado which proved fast in the lighter stuff. The fleet got away in a variable ESE wind on a falling tide at 12.00 noon with a Le Mans Start from the beach. Alan Lawrence standing in the water with his spinnaker already ... Read More »

Hobie Hout Bay Haul

As can be seen from the poster and the picture, this will be the revival of an event that was last held in the 80’s! Many people perceive Hout Bay to be a fluky sailing venue, however the south-westerly as well as the northerly and north-westerly’s offer fantastic racing in the bay with clear, steady breezes. Should the wind be out of the south, we will have an informal race off the beach to the bridge boat which will be ... Read More »

Margo Mackay night race 2014

I had the pleasure of sailing the Margo Mackay night race this past weekend. After arriving nice and early at SYC, I managed to carry out some maintenance on my “magic ‘Pora Fly” I was ready to launch by 14h30. Due to crew issues my colleague Ben Mienie, who had just finished launching his Krokodil, suggested that we “join up” and sail on one of our Dragonflies. So after having my Dragonfly on the slip way, I returned it to ... Read More »

KZN Halcat Championships

Held over 21/22/23 March in Durban Bay by Island Sailing Club a disappointing turnout of 14 boats entered. Friday sailing was held in a good breeze of 12-18 knots near the container terminal. Unfortunately breakages were the order of the day with 5 boats retiring with collapsed masts and torn sails! Saturday saw 3 races sailed, and sailing stopped early in the afternoon due to 20 knot plus winds. Again breakages of several boats occurred. After seeing the ISC lawn ... Read More »
