“The South African America’s cup yacht, Shosholoza, was set to fly a vast Aids ribbon painted on its 33-metre spinnaker today as the team shows their support for World Aids Day” is what the opening paragraph of today’s newspaper report from 2004 read.
The feature image is a great pic of ‘Shosholoza’ with her huge “aids” spinnaker and the majestic Lions Head in the background.
One thing yachting sponsorship does give a sponsor is very unique bill boarding opportunities on sails. But, those billboards don’t bring a return in the middle of the ocean, so their impact has to be gained close to land!
The Rio Races and major events in the Cape have so often brought out a new spinnaker with brilliant bill boarding. Remember Phil Gutsche’s ‘Warrior’ powering away from the Rio start line with her South African Flag spinnaker crammed full of wind? ‘Allied Bank’, ‘Grinaker’, ‘Apple MacIntosh’ and so many others have all given their sponsors great exposure.
What I found interesting in todays newspaper cutting is the addition headline of: “Condoms Become SA’s Latest Fashion Accessory”!!
I wonder how?
