“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Two Interesting Profiles

I was surprised to find two profiles on two highly prominent yachties published on the same day – being Marion Cole and JJ Provoyeur.

“Master Mariner Marion” was the headline which caught my attention as she is an incredibly good yachtswoman who thoroughly deserves a place in the “who’s who of sailing in South Africa”.

The next was JJ Provoyeur, another incredibly good yachtie, master boatbuilder and talented entrepreneur. He was interviewed in the Cape Times newspaper while lying 4th in the 1989 Lipton Cup.

“The Launchpad for Future Sailing Greats” blurted the headline, with the first paragraph reading as follows: “Over the years Western Province yachtsmen have been able to show most of the other provinces a thing or two and this is not confined to any one class or type of sailing.”

“Cape-built Yacht Gets Big Natal Funding”. A super all-aluminium yacht, the ultimate cost of which will be R500 000 and which has Just won a R100 000 ocean-racing sponsorship from a major Natal company, was launched in Durban this week.

“Grassy Park Duo Hit Big-time Boat Building”. The two Muslim brothers of Grassy Park, Ismail and Fuad Jacobs, who built the beautifully lined Hulett Aluminium have become acknowledged experts in the construction of aluminium yachts in South Africa.
