I was interested to stumble across today’s” find” from a 1958 issue of SA Yachting magazine as it really appears to be the first reference the magazine made to the possibility of sailing on the Vaal Dam.
And remembering a great editorial written by SAILING Magazine staffer Mel Field in 1989 on cruising on the Vaal Dam, I have included this as a bonus read.
But getting back to the 1958 article, it’s opening few paragraphs read as follows:
“Yachting types, exiled in land-locked Transvaal Province, have always moaned about their cruising grounds.
“They have, in the past, talked of “our silly little damp patches called sailing waters, which are no bigger and no wetter than two licked postage stamps.”
“But they have suddenly woken up to the fact that they have the finest inland cruising water South of the Limpopo.
“l cannot help but suspect that if the enterprising pair, Peter Siebert and Freddie Farrell of Johannesburg, had not pointed this out to them, they would have fallen right in it not knowing it was there.”
