In a country where service delivery is generally non-existent, where theft, corruption, extortion and a host of other horrors are simply part of everyday life, every little glimmer of hope and positivity is a fillip that there is some good in our lives. And today we have the State of the Nation Address (SONA) by our President who is unlikely to say anything that is really positive, possible or which has the smallest chance of becoming a reality.
Which is why I have chosen to share the feature published in the June 2001 issue of SAILING Magazine under the headline “Thank You South Africa”.
Instead of watching, listening or reading the SONA address, read this as it will give you a good feeling, maybe even some hope too.
The opening two sentences is all I will share, and it reads as follows: “Ahhh, South Africans, thinking of your country brings on a sigh. We had such a wonderful time! Thank you.”
On second thoughts I will share the picture caption too. “The author and her mother-in-law rounding “that awesome Cape”. Barbara’s parents-in-law came specially to round the Cape”.
