Helmut Stauch was one of those legendary local sailors who had a certain magic, plus a sixth sense about him that made every boat he sailed go fast – very fast.
In today’s feature I highlight the fact that, as the SA Yachting magazine sub-head said – “Springbok Takes All F.D. Prizes At Kiel Week – something definitely to crow about.
The report went on as follows: “All South African yachtsmen will be delighted to hear that Helmut Stauch, his wife Carmen, and Wibo Swart, who are campaigning overseas for the European regatta season, have had handsome early successes.
“After a dour struggle at Kiel Week, Helmut cleaned up the opposition and won all the trophies in the Flying Dutchman class.
“Wibo Swart, unawed by the array of Olympic talent ranged against him, took consistently high placings and finally came out eighth. A splendid effort by both boats.
