There was no single theme of news from 7 August to share today, so here are four pieces of news spanning a 17 year period.
First up is the effervescent first-ever Cape to Rio Race when on this day in 1970 the headline said “A Race Against Time” with the sub-head saying “for some the Cape Town to Rio yacht race has begun already – a race against time to get their ships ready for the big event.”

Another headlined “A Taste of the Rio Work” talks about the measurement of yachts and some of the men behind that task.
It also covers a new design concept by famous American yacht designer Dick Carter.

“Marion on Crest of Wave” is all about Marion Cole with the opening paragraph reading “ skippering an all male crew in South Africa’s premier yachting event – the Lipton Challenge Cup – is plain sailing for an adventurous woman school teacher”.

“Sterkfontein Yacht Club Challenge Results” was all about the first regatta in the 1987 Challenge Series on Sterkfontein Dam.
This editorial has been chosen as “Sterkies” is something of a hidden gem in terms of inland sailing waters in our country, and also a venue those who have sailed it are in awe of.
