“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. SA One Ton Cup Challenge

by Richard Crockett

Back in its heyday ‘Archangel’, a Lavranos designed One Tonner, was a “hot” yacht sailed hard and fast by her owner and skipper Dania Baikoff. She was renamed ‘Terry Lene’ for the event thanks to sponsorship.

The yacht was extensively modified for that event to give her the best chance. Her crew were obviously Dania Baikoff, David Abromowitz (Sailing Master), Mike Puttergill (Navigator), Keith Bellamy, Johan van Rooyen, Joe and Nikolai Baikoff (Bow) and Joe Walden as Team Manager.

‘Archangel’ was dismasted shortly after the start of the 1985 Cape to Rio Race. On 2 January she embarks on another foray across the South Atlantic as ‘Alexforbes Archangel’. Skippering her to Rio in this 3 300 nautical mile race is Sibusiso Sizatu (30), ably assisted by first mate Daniel Agulhas (29), Renaldo Tshepo Mohale (29), Thando Mntambo (23), Azile Arosi (22) and Justin Peters (21).
