“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Round Britain – Trekkers Triumph

Voortrekker II at the start of the Round Britain race in 1982.

by Richard Crockett

I was reminded yesterday by a follower of this Blog of the 41st anniversary of John Martin and Bertie Reed’s victory in the Round Britain Race. As there is not much news of any consequence in the newspaper cuttings today, I have chosen to share the magazine reports on their magnificent victory.

According to Bob Fisher’s report, their victory was hard fought and well deserved in a large fleet. This is what he said about the fleet:

“The Round Britain Race, which is run every four years, is a severe test of men and boats. It attracts an international entry (this year there were 13 countries represented) and it had finally attracted my attention to such a degree that I was among the 194 sailors on the 97 yachts which set out from Plymouth. Boats ranged from a 7,6m Quarter-tonner through catamarans of all sizes as well as mono hulls, to the giant 24,5 m ‘Stevens Lefield Challenger’ which was where I had agreed to crew Leslie Williams.”
