A century of sailing. The Redhouse yacht Club, situated on the Swartkops River in the picturesque village of Redhouse, celebrates its centenary this year. In the picture youngsters enjoy the annual Inter-Schools Regatta, held at the club last month.

We have a handful of yacht clubs in this country which have attained “centenary” status. Royal Natal Yacht Club, Zwartkops YC, Point YC, the Royal Cape YC and Redhouse YC are the ones I can think of off-hand and without researching.

In 2004, from small beginnings, the Redhouse Yacht Club, in the charming riverside village on the banks of Swartkops River, now provides sailing, aquatic sports and loads of family fun for folk in the metro area.

Club commodore Frank Collier sums up 100 years of the club’s history: “It all began on October 24, 1904 when 16 “gentlemen” met at the Zwartkops Rowing Club to inaugurate a sailing club at Redhouse. Mr R P Jones was elected chairman. Mr J C. Carden, who incidentally, was the manager of the first Springbok Rugby team to tour the UK, proposed that the name should be Redhouse Sailing Club. But at the next meeting the name was changed to Redhouse Yacht Club to avoid clashing with the existing Redhouse Swimming Club.”
