“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Powerhouse Regatta

by Richard Crockett

The inaugural Smirnoff Spring Regatta in 1982 was described as “A powerhouse regatta – the best racing ever!”

That is how every one of the 58 entries in the inaugural Smirnoff Spring Regatta – incorporating the Flamenca Nationals, the RCOD and Sweetpea Western Province Championships, and the class championships for the·L26 and Buccaneer classes – described the two weekends of superb racing in False Bay in October.

It was summed up at its conclusion as a magnificent two weekends of sailing, and one which has firmly established the Smirnoff Regatta on the local sailing calendar. All 58 competitors are determined about this!

The results also read like a “Who’s Who” of our sailing elite. You will have to read the report to see why this was such a successful regatta.
