“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. On this Day in the Rio Race

Translated 9.

by Richard Crockett

Now that the Cape2Rio Race is in full swing and the fleet have found their sea legs, settled down into their routines and now starting to push harder, it’s time to look back on the race news from days of yore.

But before that, a quick summary of what’s happening out on the water.

The race to cross the line first in Rio lies with the catamaran ‘Norhi’, followed some 20nm astern by ‘Aventurerio 4′.

On handicap the only singlehanded entry, Adrian Kuttel’s ‘Atalanta’, is being sailed exceptionally well and heading the handicap honours, and at this stage is significantly better than the fully crewed yachts. At one point he was making really good “northing”, but now he is on a south westerly heading and sailing a shade under 9 knots, second fastest of the monohulls, with ‘Ray of Light’ matching his speed, and being the furthest yacht north.

Charging up the fleet is ‘Translated 9′ – at 65′ the biggest monohull on the course, and fastest in the fleet during the last fleet update.
