Some weeks ago now I shared a feature on Jim Crawford’s ‘Dirigo II’, and am able to share an update today. As a bonus there are also two pages of “Letters to the Editor”, which make interesting reading especially as one reader suggested the RCOD be named the “Doodkis Class”! Why? As for ‘Dirigo II’, this is how the feature was introduced: “When Jim Crawford took on board a South African crew in Durban for his schooner ‘Dirigo II’, he said he would turn them into good seamen and see that they got an introduction to top-class ocean racing in the United States, so one would expect from a man who sailed his ship round the world in so seamanlike a manner, he was as good as his word.
“All three have had fine opportunities for hard sailing. One of them, Jan Lello, has chalked up 12,500 miles since he left the Royal Cape Yacht Club basin in the ‘Cariad’ about a year ago and is off to the Pacific now for the Honolulu Race from San Francisco. This will soon bring his tally to something like a remarkable 20,000 miles in little more than a year – practically all of it either in hard-driven ships or actual ocean racing.”
