SA Yachting magazine had a Durban correspondent who loved to capture the round-the-worlders when they arrived in Durban, and always wrote about the people, their boats and the passages they had undertaken. Bianca Lavies was an extraordinary talent.
Today there are just two pages of news, but they are crammed full with photos and news.
Heading the pack was the departure of Robin Knox-Johnston’s ‘Suhaili’ from Durban for the UK.
A pic with a lengthy caption is of Bob and Nancy Griffiths who had sailed from Hawaii aboard their concrete (ferro-cement) boat which had proven itself to be exceptionally seaworthy as it had taken them around Cape Horn.
There’s an interesting piece on a Canadian family sailing their 37-footer ‘Kalea’.
The Davenport family from California sailed ‘Karen Margrethe’ into Durban having been cruising for six years.
And finally there is George and Elga Koch who thought at the time they were the first German couple to sail around the world in a small yacht.
There’s lots of interest in these two pages today.
