Following on from yesterday’s Blog about Helmut Stauch winning convincingly in Europe, I can today share an article he wrote for SA Yachting magazine.
What interested me most about this report, beside what he shared on the build-up to the Olympics and campaigning in Europe generally, was the following:
“We went to see Dane Elvstrom at his home, and what a perfect set-up he has. An old house (where he was born) right on the sea, just outside of Copenhagen. In the basement his workshop; gaily-painted walls, plants and flowers on the window sill, rock n’ roll music, and about 10 people sewing away.
“The first sail I noticed was for a Sprog and he told me how pleased he was with the orders from South Africa. Incidentally, he enjoyed his trip to the Union immensely, and keeps on showing his colour slides to large audiences.
“Outside on a jetty, he has two masts which he can turn and adjust, complete with boom and fittings and every sail he makes is set and tested and if necessary, adjusted. He continually experiments and tries things out on himself and others.”
