“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Flying Dutchman Championships

John Sully and Robin Standing with the Booth Championship Bowl and the Daily News Trophy.

By Richard Crockett

Can you believe it, but having mentioned the “Booth Bowl” yesterday, the report on the FD Champs I have selected for today has a photo of Robin Standing, John Sully’s crew, holding it!

Sadly, no one has yet come forward on the whereabouts of this trophy.

The FD report highlights many of the top sailors of the time, and even one of the top three British FD exponents who came out to compete. It’s a complete report with race-by-race results too.

There is much more to read as well because the FDs were part of the Class and Club news section, and under “Club Notes” there are two images of the first RCODs leaving the builders shed. The caption read as follows: “Royal Cape’s One-design: Big day for South Africa’s best-known deep-water club was early in July when two of their new craft, for Table Bay racing, emerged from builder Munna’s workshop at the same time. Shown here is the loading for the trip to the docks and the ingenious manner in which Leon Policansky, who has been supervising their construction, used a sturdy fork-lift truck to do the man-handling. The heavy, deep fin keels and masts and rigging were fitted after they were placed in their special cradles. RCYC will have at least four of these semi-planing hulls, based on Van der Stadt’s famous ‘Zeeslang’, racing this summer.”

And there’s much more too…
