“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Club Notes From September 1966

By Richard Crockett

Club Notes, and in fact all the editorials I have been sharing recently have attracted an immense amount of interest and comment. This was the section of SA Yachting magazine where the news snippets were shared and devoured every month way back in the day!

Today’s page of people pics had one photo really jump out at me as I instantly recognised the figure of Skip Roberts, despite being crouched down in Tom McCrorie’s FD. I sailed many a season with Skip on keelboats when he was Terry Clarence’s right-hand man aboard ‘Assegai’. Skip’s father passed away during the 1976 Cape to Rio Race and was buried at sea in a rather moving ceremony performed from the SA Navy Guardship, with Skip having been taken off ‘Nibama’ for the duration, and then returned to carry on racing.

Today’s Headlines Are:
• Semana International De Vela (International Sailing Week in Lourenco Marques).
• Elegance’s Voyage – and A Photo of the 6 Medical Who Crewed the Vessel
• Boat Show At LM
• Point Yacht Club – AGM
• The Schikkinger Trimaran – A 35-foot Lodestar Tri
• …And the Daniels One – Another Lodestar 35 Tri Built by Tony Daniels
• Launching Skyliner – 46′ Steel Ketch
• David Smith’s Rcod Launched
