Today’s newspaper feature was written by Michel Fascio, the Daily News representative who sailed from Rio de Janeiro to Cape Town aboard the yacht ‘Stormy’ in preparation for the January 1971 Cape to Rio Race.

Below are just three paragraphs from a lengthy feature:

“From out to sea, Cape Town at night is an incredibly beautiful sight – countless lights nestling below the dark mass of Table Mountain. It is a sight that promises a safe haven and all the comforts of life ashore.

“We learned much about the South Atlantic, about its sudden raging moods – and about the way ‘Stormy’ can take punishment.

I had been told that waves never grew bigger than 20 ft. in the South Atlantic. But I will refer my informants to the waves that slammed into us on the night of October 6 – six days after leaving lnacessible Island in the Tristan group. They were to my estimate at least, 40ft. high, maybe more, and they were frightening.”

In my photo archives I found a pic of the crew from that voyage and share it today.
