“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. 1978 Castle Week

by Richard Crockett

I often feel that changing the name of a regatta to accommodate sponsors changes the face of the event. The Minister’s Cup is a case in point as it became Castle Week. Now the Minister’s Cup had a good ring to it, not that the word CASTLE didn’t – especially when in ones mind there are images of frosty lagers – lots of them waiting for thirsty yachties to quaff them with gay abandon!

But sponsorship is, after all, the lifeblood of our sport.

This was a clean sweep for the Lavranos designed Sweet Pea as they took first and second spots. With Geoff Meek and Bobby Bongers sailing them should we have expected anything less?

This is a lengthy report with lots of names used for both boats and sailors, some still sailing today! That’s both boats and people still sailing today – some 40 years later.

And even on the Vaal Dam this regatta had a long distance race, a point I lamented on yesterday.
