As the Finn Class locally is doing its best to keep the class and that unique Finn spirit going, its appropriate to share the report on the 1962 Gold Cup, which was written by Bob Nuttall, as a South African contingent competed.
This is what Nuttall wrote: “Three South African representatives attended the Finn Gold Cub. 1962. The two Durban skippers, Bob Nuttall and Johan Louter, shipped their boats from Durban to Tonsberg and Robin Vorster of Pretoria had a new fibreglass Pearson hull sent from England to Tonsberg.
“The South African contingent arrived at Tonberg early, but were dogged by a fair amount of bad luck. The sailing and camping gear packed in Bob Nuttall’s boat had been pilfered, probably before the ship reached Rotterdam. When Nuttall and Louter arrived in Rotterdam they went down the hold of the ship to check the gear and Nuttall fell while climbing over the cargo and badly sprained his ankle. This sprain later handicapped him during the Gold Cup series.”
