Vasco da Gama Race 2016
Jasper van der Westhuizen has entered ‘Izimoya II’ a Wayward 37 in the monohull rally class.
He has been sailing since the ‘70s where he started in Port Elizabeth on the Zwartkops river in a Sprog. His law practice took him to Pretoria where the lack of wind compared to what he was used to in Port Elizabeth, saw him lose interest in sailing.
But once bitten with the sailing bug, it’s hard to ever lose interest, so he came back to the sport sailing a Holiday 23 on the Vaal Dam, St Francis Bay and Port Owen – wherever the whim took him. Many of his crew for the Vasco da Gama Race are H23 sailors.
A jaunt across the South Atlantic in the last Rio Race aboard a 50′ cruiser, participation in the annual Mykonos Offshore Race and the delivery of ‘Izimoyo’ from Cape Town to St Francis is just some of his ocean sailing experience.
For van der Westhuizen, sailing must be fun and winning a bonus.
