“Talking Sailing”from My Archives. RSA Barcelona Olympic Sailing Trials

by Richard Crockett

Because of our readmission to international sport our country was to again take its rightful place at the Olympic Games. As a result, and with so many top-class yachties in our country, it was decided by the wise old heads at SAYRA to hold trails off Durban before a team was announced.

This was no easy task as sailing trials were something new to our administrators and trialists too, so naturally there were some hitches and unhappiness.

The racing was good as Durban supplied a variety of conditions giving everyone a fair shot at glory.

Sadly some competitors upped anchor and left the trials early after realising that they were not in contention for selection. Sad that as it certainly lowered the competitive edge in subsequent races.

Some results were very close and went down to the wire. To get that detail one should read the full text and read the biographies of each competitor selected.
