I remember following the Whitbread Round the World race from its inception, and being in awe, and somewhat jealous too, of those who were selected to crew.
One of my abiding memories of the actual Whitbread Races was Whitbread’s advertising as a brewer of beer. The advert was simple with an image of a rough sea and the words “Water, Water everywhere – and not a drop to drink”.
Now imagine if the ocean was beer instead of salt water!!
I digress as today’s newspaper history is in fact a book review, written in 1993, on the race, and opens as follows:
“Fourteen yachts set sail·on September 25 from Southampton to Punta del Este in Uruguay on the first leg of the sixth Whitbread Round the World Race.
“Although the hardships of cold, rough seas and the glory of success can only really be understood by those who have taken part, the. story of the race is told in a most captivating way in “Ocean Conquest” written by British yachting journalists Bob Fisher and Barry Pickthall.”
This is a good read with a smattering of excellent photos.
