“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Trimmed and Set to Ride Olympic Wave of Success

By Richard Crockett

30 Years ago Ian Ainslie was interviewed by Peta Lee of the Sunday Times for her “Me and My Health” column. Ainslie was a household name in yachting circles back then, and still today he is remembered and his name mentioned in awe.

The first few paragraphs of this interview opened with these words from Ainslie: –

“Sailing small single-man Finns in the Olympics is very different from those big yachts which, with their mechanical winches, require very little strain.

“What I do requires quite different strength.

“The way you move your body dictates how the boat goes through the waves.

“You hook your feet under a strap and lean out to counteract the force of the·wind, which means you have to be quite athletic.

“You need a very strong lower back, stomach and legs. I’m in no danger of winning a body beautiful competition, but I have a lot of strength in my lower body.”

In this interview Ainslie gives further insight into his preparation, diet, sun care and more.
