29 years ago today the Sunday Tribune newspaper cutting I am sharing lamented the fate of an Olympic trio with the headline “Top yachting trio face the abyss”.

The feature was introduced with these words: “The ‘high’ of the Atlanta Olympics is very much a thing of the past for three KwaZulu Natal men who love the water”, and then went on to say:

“Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink. The country’s top yachtsmen in the form of KwaZulu Natal-based Bruce Savage, Clynton Wade-Lehman and Ian Ainslie are on the lookout for employment, and first on their list could be the Department of Water Affairs or the SA Navy.

The KwaZulu-Natalians gazed across the waters as the sun began to set over the Mother City.

“The Atlanta Games are now a thing of the past, but despite producing performances of courage at the international showpiece of world sport, they now find themselves at a crossroads in their respective careers.

“What Now?”

Indeed what now as the author tries to unravel some of the issues.
