Today’s feature article was written in 1995 by Skip Novak, and as his sub-head says, “First viewed from the sea the Horn draws one sailor back again”.
He’s obviously referring to Cape Horn, that notorious southernmost point of South America. To put things in perspective, this is what he says about that landmark: “The reputation of Cape Horn weather with 100-knot winds, mountainous seas and snow storms in high summer may seem like an exaggeration, but it has foundation in a substantial record of shipwreck. The features on the chart of the area are named for good reason and the warning is clear: Isla Desolacion, Isla Il Defonso,
Isla Hope, Arrecife Pelieroso, Falso Cabo de Homos and Isla Deceit.
This is not a doom and gloom feature, but rather an easy-to-read account of the area surround Cape Horn and the wonderful cruising one can have – courage permitting!
