“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. This Unbroken Reed Set for ‘93 Rio Race

One name most local yachties will never forget in sailing is Bertie “Biltong” Reed as he did so much on the water and was, well, simply a legend. Whether single-handed on an ageing ‘Voortrekker I’ and later aboard ‘Voortrekker II’, to round-the-buoys and ocean races with a full crew, Bertie did it all.

What few people know is that he really hated being referred to as “Biltong Bertie’.

His chances of competing in the 1993 Rio Race were slim after a car accident, yet he managed to get the green light to go, and sailed with a cast on his leg.

“Just months after being in danger of losing his right leg, South Africa’s famed yachtsman Bertie “Biltong” Reed has announced a fighting comeback to sailing by entering the Cape-to-Rio race.”
