The very first Cape to Rio race was something of an unknown to most as in those days ocean races were few and far between – especially trans-ocean races.
It was not surprising that the lure of Rio, adventure and quite simply fun in the sun brought together an eclectic bunch of adventurous souls, including an all-woman team who competed aboard ‘Sprinter’, one of the smallest boats in the race.
With hindsight it’s not surprising that Scope Magazine horned in on their act and gave a lot of space to the women in this crew. Yet it’s hard to believe that the feature selected today was published 55 years ago, and concentrated on Molly Warr the skipper of ‘Sprinter’.
The Scope sub-head read as follows:
“Only a few tension-filled weeks to go and then the excitement begins. In mid-.January our intrepid women set off in our 32·foot sloop, Sprinter, on one of the greatest adventures ever undertaken by an all-girl team – the 4,000-mile yacht race from the Cape to Rio”.
