“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. The Offshore Race to Saldanha Bay

Races to Saldanha Bay have today established themselves as one of those “must do” events as it’s a race which is not too long, and which offers great facilities in Saldanha Bay. However, way back in 1963 the race was far longer as it took competitors to a marker off Lamberts Bay before finishing in Saldanha – a distance of 135nm.

This is how SA Yachting magazine reported on it: “The Royal Cape Yacht Club in conjunction with the Cruising Association of South Africa who, for the past number of years, have been holding races out of Simonstown to either Port Elizabeth or Mossel Bay finished 1963 with a race over a totally new course. They started this time in Cape Town, rounded a buoy off Lamberts Bay, 135 mile to the north, and finished at Saldanha Bay some 60 miles south again.
