Lin and Larry Pardey were the doyens of cruising in their heydays, sailing the world in simple boats sans electronics and equipment requiring power. It was something of a gypsy lifestyle, but one which suited them, and which brought joy and answers to cruising folk the world over who read their very informative books and magazine articles.
In this feature they answer some telling questions as posed by cruisers.
To help you understand their point of view, long before Larry began building their first cruising boat, 24 foot ‘Seraffyn’, his course had been set by his grandparents, two very satisfying and satisfied folks who lived simply and modestly, working only six months each year, travelling the rest on land. Their axiom, “The only way to beat the system is to take time off to do what you want to do”. Their corollary to this: “If everyone else does it, look at it with suspicion. Or, to put this in modern context, the pressures of societal rules lead people toward a central, normal way of thinking. By being willing to accept the consequences of being different you can break free to do what you want. Only after Lin and Larry had worked and saved to build ‘Seraffyn’ did they begin to understand their corollary, as they found no-one encouraged people to go off cruising.
