‘Stormvogel’ is a yacht that many offshore sailors talk about with reverence and awe as she was just one of those very special racing yachts which was to some degree ahead of her time.
Today I am able to share a glimpse of “her luxurious living quarters” as the January/February issue of SA Yachting in 1961 said in the headline.
As a bonus there is also a quiz for “would-be old salts”.
This is what was said about Stormvogel in this feature: “Biggest news in Southern African yachting will be the launching soon of ‘Stormvogel’, the most advanced and biggest sailing yacht ever built in our parts – and probably the fastest ocean racer that will be competing in international events this year.
“Mr. C. Bruynzeel, of Stellenbosch, who will skipper the ‘Stormvogel’ in her races, is an international name in this greatest of all sports. Since the early thirties he has owned some of the finest yachts competing in the New York-Bermuda Race, the Trans-Atlantics, the Fastnet Rock race and a host of others. And for the ocean crossings to England ‘Stormvogel’ will have a professional skipper who has already crossed both Atlantics happily and without incident in a much smaller yacht.”
