“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Square Rig for South Africa & More…

By Richard Crockett

Another day and another varied selection of features to read about today.

The one which really caught my eye though was the headline “Square Rig for South Africa”, a project Arthur Holgate was investigating before he was killed in a road accident in Rhode Island.

Wouldn’t it have been something to have a Tall Ship as a training vessel in this country?

There were several other discussions about similar projects over the years, but sadly none ever came to fruition.

Another item which saddened me was that the SA Circuit Trophy concept initiated by CASA never got off the ground. I wonder what happened to the trophy?

Today’s features are:
• Square Rig for South Africa
• SA Circuit Trophy
• Wilbur Ellis da Gama Race – a Thumper
• Natal One-Design Provincials
• Finn & Fireball Nationals
• Eastern Cape Sailing

Enjoy today’s selection.
