SA Yachting magazine back in the day was always full of Class News, with today’s main feature being the first Sprog Week regatta.
There are two bonus reads, with news on Zeekoe Vlei and also the FD Winter Champs and the Glinane Finn Week.
The Sprog report, written by Dr Jack Goldsmith, was introduced like this: “The first Sprog Class Week was held in Durban from July 6 to 11 and was thoroughly enjoyable. Racing for the magnificent trophy presented by Steve Glinane was extremely keen, close and of a high standard, which is immediately apparent from the results, as the contest was decided on a series of six races, with five to count, and these were won by five different helmsmen!
“Thirty-four boats were entered and this figure includes ten visitors, two of which came all the way from Rhodesia to participate. As the closing date for entries approached, the organising committee developed marked signs of nervous tension for it was feared that the event might not attract as many visitors as was hoped for and end up by being just another match between the local skippers.”
I have a question that maybe an old “Sprogite” might be able to answer: “Was this perhaps the beginning of the Glinane Finn Week regattas, and was the “magnificent trophy presented by Steve Glinane the Glinane Week Sprog Trophy?
