“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Sandefjord’s Race Crew Will Be Family Affair

By Richard Crockett

Most old sea dogs and many an old landlubber fondly remember the 1970s film made of ‘Sandefjord’s circumnavigation. Many will tell you very proudly that it inspired them to take up the sport, so today’s newspaper cutting has been chosen to simply stir those memories and emotions.

This is what the Argus newspaper said 55 years ago today: “Probably the best-known sailing boat in South Africa, after Voortrekker, is ‘Sandefjord, the 57-year-old former Norwegian lifeboat now at moorings in Cape Town’s yacht basin.

“Thousands of people, yachtsmen as well as those who would not dream of going to sea in anything but a mailship, enjoyed the film of her world cruise some years ago.

“Thus, there was a general sense of pleasure when it was announced that the sturdy old-timer was an entry for next month’s Cape-to-Rio race, along with all the modern racers that can run rings around her.”

There’s lots to read about ‘Sandefjord and her crew today.
