“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Round the Island Race.

The 2017 Round the Island race as captured by Ingrid Willcox.

By Richard Crockett

Whenever I search my archives I regularly come across references to the Round the Island race on the Vaal Dam, and it triggers a memory note that I should share info on this race. Today it is a very well run annual event organised by the Lake Deneys Yacht Club.

The very first reference I can find of the event was in August 1962, in a very brief report that did not even give the number of entrants. However the first 10 boats to finish were FDs – which started last!

In 1966 the only reference I found was in the Spearhead Class news where it said Spearheads put in a good showing!

And in 1968 the only reference was in the GP14 Class news section which reported that the course had been increased to 20 miles.

Hopefully more detailed reports will come to light when I search during the ‘70s.
