“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Rothmans Week & St Helena Races

Three Spears, handicap winner of the recent Mauritius Durban race, has been a regular competitor in Rothmans Week. Many eyes will be on the yacht for this year’s race.

As the festive season is now well and truly upon us and madness abounds, I would like to advise followers of this Blog that I am taking the opportunity to slow down a little during this period, catch my thoughts and mull over my offerings for the new year. So until next year I may not post items every day, nor early in the morning either, but simply as the whim takes me!

My thanks to the loyal followers who always urge me on and give great support. Please know that you are not forgotten, nor ignored, as there will be the occasional contribution to lighten the day.

So without further ado, on this day in 1986 the newspaper headline blurted “Rothmans Week Regatta in Table Bay Attracts 70 Yachts”.

Plus as a sidebar to the above feature, the headline said: “Single-Handed Atlantic Race to Round Island of St Helena”.

It was generally felt that the single-handed South Atlantic yacht race, which seemed doomed after Uruguay was ruled out as the destination, will definitely start from Hout Bay on February 22.
