Today’s feature is actually titled “Vigor’s Inter-denominational Boat Naming Ceremony”. It was written by yachtsman and author John Vigor who emigrated from Durban to the USA many, many years ago, with his wife and two kids aboard their Morgan 31.
Vigor is a man of the sea who competed in the very first 1971 Cape to Rio race with David Cox aboard ‘Diana-K’. He was a newspaper man through and through, and eventually became a well respected author of many technical boating books. He’s a prolific writer.
One is always told how unlucky it is to simply rename a boat without “doing it properly”! So in typical Vigor fashion when he needed to rename his own yacht, he researched the subject thoroughly and wrote this easy-to-read and interesting piece on the subject.
One of the simply pleasures of owning a boat is to hear these words: “I name this ship … and may she bring fair winds and good fortune to all who sail on her.”
