It’s hard to believe that the inaugural Rothman’s Week Regatta on Table Bay was in 1974 – that’s 50 years ago now!
There are still a lot of old salts out there who would have competed in that regatta, and who still have vivid memories of the occasion. To those much younger who were not there, treat this feature as a history lesson and reminder as to just how strong offshore sailing was in days of yore.
At that time in our sport there was a lot of rivalry between the provinces, so imagine the dismay of the Capetonians when Gordon Neill’s ‘Golden Fleece’ took the honours. It matters not a jot any longer, but hurt at the time.
It’s not for me to say much about the event now, other than read it, enjoy it, and simply revel in bringing back the past.
A bonus today is that the Agulhas Race report follows the Rothmans Week one – giving two good reads!
