“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Rampage Around the Cape

By Richard Crockett

I have chosen this feature editorial to share today as not only is it an interesting read, but it reminds me of good seamanship and the ability of yachties in days of yore to weather a storm rather than to see one coming on a weather app and not put to sea at all.

Seamanship is also key in this article, and again when comparing it to days of yore, I feel it is something lacking in most modern yachties who tend to be fast-tracked through the system to get that magical “skippers ticket” demanded of them by law.

I won’t fixate on that issue now, but rather take you to the final sentences in this feature where the author says this:

“… Because, by God, that was one of the finest sails I’ve had in my life, and on that day ‘Caprice’ carved not only a foaming groove round the shank end of Africa but also a special niche in my memory.”
